Women’s Soccer Defeats Cornell, 3-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange women’s soccer team beat Cornell, 3-1, Wednesday evening at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange snapped a four-game winless streak and moved to 7-5-2 on the season, 1-4-1 in the BIG EAST. The Big Red is 4-5-2 on the season.
The Big Red struck first as Jackie Stromberg netted the first goal of the game just 22 seconds into the contest.
The Orange answered as senior Nina Scalzo found the back of the net following a corner kick in the 26th minute. Junior Brooke DeRosa was credited with the assist. The goal was Scalzo’s second of the season and 26th of her career. The senior entered the game tied for third on SU’s all-time goals list and is now in sole possession and one goal behind Candace Reich for second place.
Senior Helen Fox scored eight minutes into the second half to give the Orange a 2-1 lead. Fox carried the ball deep in the box and fired it from the left, it deflected off a Cornell defender and into the net. Fox was not done, she added her third goal of the season in the 87th minute. Senior Stephanie Sybert played the ball through the defense and Fox, the former track athlete, showed her speed, beating the goalie to the ball and hitting the empty net. Fox is now tied with sophomore Molly McManus with a team-leading eight points.
Senior goalie Shannon Myers finished the night with two saves, while Cornell’s Katie Thomas and Katrina Matlin combined for three saves.
SU out-shot the Big Red 16-8 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Syracuse stepped up in the second half, allowing just one shot while registering 10 in the final 45 minutes.
The Orange is 7-0-1 versus Cornell and 5-0-0 versus New York State opponents this season. This marks the first time this season that SU has comeback to win after trailing 1-0.
The Orange hosts BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. for SU’s final home game this year. Syracuse will celebrate Senior Night prior to the contest.
