SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seton Hall scored in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 victory versus Syracuse in BIG EAST men’s soccer play at the SU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16. The 25th-ranked Pirates snapped a two-game conference road losing streak to improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play. The Orange has lost seven straight, all by one goal, and is now 2-10-0 overall and 0-5-0 in BIG EAST play.
The game’s only goal came with 27:16 left in the second half. Matt Salotti threaded a pass to Sacha Kljestan on the left wing, and Kljestan fired the ball into the left side of the net for the game-winner. The Pirates had chances to extend their lead, but Orange goalkeeper Rich Scheer made two of his season-best five saves to keep the score at 1-0. With 10:30 to go, Scheer stopped a one-on-one opportunity, and three minutes letter made a diving stop on point-blank shot. The Pirates entered the game as the BIG EAST’s second-best scoring team at nearly two goals per game. Pirate goalkeeper Ian Joyce notched his fourth win of the season with two saves, both in the second half.
The Orange’s best chance to tie the game came with just less than six minutes left. Ezra Prendergast hammered a ball past Joyce, but defender Jason Hernandez was able to deflect the shot away from the goal.
Seton Hall outshot the Orange, 13-12, while each team took four corner kicks.
The victory was the first for the Pirates at the SU Soccer Stadium since 1997, snapping a three-game winless streak (0-2-1). The Orange has now lost three consecutive 1-0 games to ranked opponents. It is SU’s school-record seventh 1-0 loss of the season. Syracuse’s last 14 games, including all 12 this season, have been decided by one goal.
The Orange plays the third of its four straight home games on Wednesday, Oct. 20 against Rutgers. Kickoff at the SU Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
