WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Shana Thomas scored a career-high two goals to lead the Orange women’s soccer team to a BIG EAST victory at Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 17. Syracuse snapped a six-game winless streak in conference play to improve to 8-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas are now 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league action.
Syracuse goalkeeper Shannon Myers made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Myers ranks fifth on the Syracuse single-season shutout list and took over sole possession of second place on the SU career list with 14.
Thomas put the Orange on top, 1-0, just 3:04 into the contest. She picked up a loose ball in front of the net and slid it past Georgetown keeper Jade Higgins for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Thomas sealed the victory in the last five minutes of the game with her second tally.
Thomas now leads the Orange with five goals and 10 points. SU is 4-0 this season when Thomas nets a goal. Her two scores stopped a personal seven-game scoreless streak.
Higgins made two saves for Georgetown in the loss. The Hoyas outshot the Orange, 19-6, including a 9-2 advantage in the second half. Georgetown also had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The game was the first of a four-game road stretch to close out the regular season. Syracuse will play the first of two remaining league games at Providence on Friday, Oct. 22.
