
Women's Soccer Defeats St. John's, 3-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women’s soccer team opened the BIG EAST schedule by defeating St. John’s, 3-0, Friday night at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange (4-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) handed the Red Storm (6-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) its first loss of the season.
The Orange opened the scoring on a corner kick by senior Kelly Bailie in the 39th minute. Bailie’s perfect kick found the head of senior captain Sarah Elnicky, who angled the header to the left of St. John’s goalie Tracey Rollings. The goal was Elnicky’s second of the season, and Bailie tallied her second helper this year.
Syracuse added to its lead 10 minutes into the second half as senior captain Helen Fox passed the ball ahead to senior Natalie Galas who found the back of the net. Galas notched her first goal of the season and 15th of her career. Galas moved into seventh on the all-time goals and points lists at SU.
Freshman Maggie Falkenreck gave the Orange a 3-0 lead with her first-career goal. Falkenreck gathered a deflected ball and fired it from just outside the penalty area to the upper-right of the goal.
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Myers continues her climb in the Syracuse record books. Myers earned her third shutout of the season. Myers is tied for second in career shutouts with 13 and she is tied for fifth in season shutouts. The Orange defense continued its great play allowing only five shots.
Rollings recorded five saves in the loss while Myers recorded two saves.
SU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. as the Orange welcomes #2 Notre Dame to the SU Soccer Stadium. The game will be televised locally on Time Warner Channel 26 on Monday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m.
