
Women’s Soccer Loses, 4-1, at #20 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Orange women’s soccer team lost 4-1 to No. 20 West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va. on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Orange is 6-3-2 on the season, 1-2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Mountaineers improve to 9-3-0, 4-2-0 in the conference.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring as Ashley Banks scored in the 12th minute when she flicked a pass from Cathy Abel past senior goalkeeper Shannon Myers.
The Orange knotted the score at 1-1 just three minutes later when a shot by sophomore Molly McManus bounced out of West Virginia goalkeeper Lana Bannerman's hands. Senior Courtney Spencer was credited with the assist. McManus leads the Orange with eight points on three goals and two assists this season.
Off assists from Ashley Banks and Laura Kane, Mountaineer Kim Bonilla put WVU up for good at 24:37 with her fourth goal of the season.
Marisa Kanela and Rachel Minnich added the Mountaineers third and fourth goals of the match at the 44:29 and 67:38 marks, respectively.
Myers recorded seven saves on the day and is six away from taking over first place on SU's all-time saves list. Bannerman recorded four saves on the day and Jacque Sutphin had two saves for the Mountaineers.
The Syracuse and West Virginia series is now tied at 3-3-0.
The Orange returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8 at home versus Connecticut. Syracuse has never beaten the Huskies in nine meetings.
