Orange Scores 3-2 Victory in Season Finale

PITTSBURGH, Pa.. – Freshman Brad Peetoom scored a career-high two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime to lead the Orange men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Nov. 2. SU ended the 2004 season with three wins in its last five games to finish 5-12-0 overall and 3-7-0 in BIG EAST play. The Panthers are now 5-8-3 overall and 3-6-1 in the league.
Junior Mike McCallion had a career-high two assists, including one on Peetoom’s game-winner. Senior Ryan Hickey also contributed an assist on the game-winning goal, his final touch in an SU uniform. Freshman Isaac Collings tallied the Orange’s first goal of the game, his second of the season.
Peetoom was the first SU player to have a multi-goal game and finished his rookie season as the Orange’s leading scorer with four goals and eight points. McCallion’s two assists were also a season high for SU.
Juniors Alim Karim and Rich Scheer split time in goal for SU. Karim got the start and made five saves while giving up one goal. Scheer played the final 61:11 to earn the victory, allowing one goal and making seven saves, including key stops in the extra sessions.
Pittsburgh scored the first goal of the game on a Pat Kerr shot from 20 yards out. The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime. Collings tied the game in the 59th minute when he picked up a loose ball and fired it past Pittsburgh keeper Justin Lowery from 30 yards away. The Panthers retook the lead on Keeyan Young’s rebound goal in the 63rd minute. With less than five minutes remaining, Peetoom netted the first of his two goals by converting a pass from McCallion. After the end of regulation and a scoreless first overtime, the tandem connected again in the 107th minute. Hickey played a ball to McCallion, who found Peetoom for a breakaway score and the victory.
Syracuse’s victory snapped an 11-game winless streak in overtime games (0-4-7). The Orange’s three goals marked a season high and ran SU’s winning streak to 18 games when scoring at least three times.
