Construction of SU Football Strength and Conditioning Training Facility to Begin in Spring 2005

Syracuse University Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel announced today the plan to build a new state-of-the-art football strength and conditioning training facility. This 11,200 square-foot strength training facility will be adjacent to the football training room and consist of a lower level floor and an upper level balcony.
The project plan, which is in the final design phase, will be submitted to the City Planning Commission in the next few weeks. Pending the City Planning Commission’s approval, ground breaking is expected to occur in spring 2005 with project completion in summer 2005, prior to the start of football season.
“This new strength and conditioning training facility will complement the Iocolano-Petty Football Complex, that also includes the Michael M. Bill Locker Room and a new sports medicine facility,” Crouthamel said. “During its 115 year history, the Syracuse University football program has grown from being a respected independent team to becoming a founding member of The BIG EAST Football Conference in 1990. In order to maintain the position that Syracuse University has established, we are committed to competing with the schools in our conference and in Division IA football on the field. In order to do so we must also compete with our facilities.”
The $3 million strength and conditioning training facility will be constructed as an addition to the football complex, built off the existing football training room. The lower level of the complex will be dedicated to free weights and weight machines. The balcony level will be used for aerobic equipment. Similar to the process used three years ago for the new football locker room, the athletics department is currently working on a fund raising campaign for a naming donor and supporters, and initially will use athletics department reserves to fund the project.“This facility will benefit all of our 21 athletics teams because today many more student-athletes are using the existing weight room than the facility can accommodate,” Crouthamel said. “While the new strength and conditioning training facility will be used primarily by the football program, it will be available to other student-athletes, as well.”
