SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) was named to the 2004 STX Division I All-America Field Hockey Second Team, selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and announced on November 23.
Wagner is just the 13th Orange field hockey player to earn All-America accolades. It is the sixth-straight season that Syracuse has placed a student-athlete on the All-America squad. Wagner follows Cheri Herr and Audrey Latsko as the third goalkeeper in school history to be named an All-American.
Wagner played a key role in Syracuse’s return to the BIG EAST Championship this year. She was unanimously tabbed the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. She anchored the SU defense all season with her strong play in net, earning four shutouts and posting a 1.49 goals against average. Wagner finished the season tied for seventh in the nation in save percentage with a .818 mark. The senior allowed just eight goals in SU’s five league games, the second fewest among BIG EAST goalkeepers. Wagner was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27. She was one of two goalies chosen to represent the North Squad in the STX/NFHCA North/South Senior All-Star game on Nov. 20 at Wake Forest University.
