SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse football team will face Georgia Tech in the 2004 Champs Sports Bowl on Tuesday, December 21 at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla. The Orange finished the 2004 regular season with a 6-5 overall mark and won a share of its fourth BIG EAST championship with a 4-2 league mark. Four of SU’s five losses came to bowl-bound teams that were ranked in the top 10 at some point during the season. Eight of SU’s 11 opponents this season will play post-season bowl games.
Syracuse has played in 21 bowl games in its history. This will be the ninth bowl appearance for the Orange under head coach Paul Pasqualoni. The 14th year head coach is 6-2 all-time in bowl games, the most bowl victories of any coach in school history.
Georgia Tech finished the regular season with a record of 6-5 overall, 4-4 in the ACC with all five losses coming at the hands of bowl-bound teams, including three defeats by teams currently in the Top 10. It is the eighth-consecutive bowl bid for the Yellow Jackets. Syracuse is 0-1 all-time against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Orange, 13-7, at the Meadowlands in the 2001 Kickoff Classic.
“Syracuse rallied late in the year to claim a share of the Big East title and certainly earned an invitation to our game,” Florida Citrus Sports Selection Committee Chairman Richard Jackson said. “With 21 previous bowl appearances, Syracuse is one of the premiere college football programs in the nation and we are thrilled that the Orange is coming to Orlando.”
