Boral Wins Three Events at Nutmeg Swimming Invitational

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Syracuse University sophomore Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) took first place in the 200 individual medley (1:55.04), the 100 breaststroke (57.29) and the 200 breaststroke (2:03.38) at the Nutmeg Invitational held Dec. 4-5, at RJ Kiphuth Exhibition Pool on the campus of Yale University. SU was one of 10 schools competing in the field, which included Yale, the University of Massachusetts, Boston College, Fairfield University and Williams College. Team scores were not kept.
Other first-place performers for the Orange included junior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) who was the meet's top finisher in the men's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:37.51. Senior Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif.) captured first place in the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.07.
On the women's side, freshman Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.) swam the 200 breaststroke in a first-place time of 2:22.97, while fellow freshman Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:06.21.
Josh Scott added a second-place finish in the men's 500 freestyle (4:39.03) and was third in the 100 free (47.51). He joined Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M), Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va.) and Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) in the 400 freestyle relay where the foursome placed second with a time of 3:09.26.
Schelling recorded third-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (52.71) and the 200 backstroke (1:52.60), while Anstrom had strong showings in the 50 freestyle (4th place - 21.78), the 100 butterfly (4th place - 51.63) and the 100 freestyle (5th place - 47.92).
Freshman Erin Homewood (Williamsburg, Va.) placed second in the women's 500 freestyle (5:04.92), while junior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) swam the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.65 to capture second place.
The SU women's 200 medley relay team made up of Maaske, Clune, Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario) and Vanessa Martinez (Maunabo, Puerto Rico) finished third with a time of 1:50.54.
Other noteworthy efforts for the Orange women included a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle for junior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) with a time of 1:56.61, a third-place finish for Maaske in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.40 and a third-place finish for Martinez in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.58.

After a visit to Puerto Rico for winter training over the break, Syracuse returns to action Jan. 15 when it travels to West Virginia for a dual meet.
