
SU Women's Basketball Loses to #2/1 Connecticut, 82-38

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orangewomen basketball team lost, 82-38, to #2/1 Connecticut in front of 3,442 people on Wednesday, February 11 at Manley Field House. It was the second-largest crowd in SU women's basketball history. Syracuse is now 6-15 overall and 3-8 in BIG EAST play. The Huskies improved to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in the league.
Freshman Tracy Harbut scored a career-high 10 points and had five boards. Senior Julie McBride led the Orange with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior Sarah Wegrzynowicz finished with five points, five rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore Barbara Turner led four Huskies scoring in double figures with 13 points. Junior Ashley Battle recorded 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal off the bench. Senior Diana Taurasi finished with 10 points, five caroms and four assists in 24 minutes of work. Sophomore Ann Strother recorded 10 points, two boards and two helpers.
Wegrzynowicz scored the first basket of the game at the 17:20 mark to put SU up 2-0. The teams were tied, 5-5, five minutes into the game when Connecticut went on a 28-8 run to take a 33-13 advantage at 4:26. Harbut scored all eight of Syracuse's points during that stretch. McBride hit a jump shot with 3:38 on the clock, and the Huskies scored the final 10 points of the half to take a 43-15 lead at halftime.
UConn scored the first six points out of the locker room to go up 49-15. McBride scored Syracuse's next six points and the Orange trailed, 52-21, with 14:25 on the clock. Midway through the half, UConn held a 61-24 advantage. The Huskies went on a 16-4 run starting at the 8:40 mark to take their largest lead of the game, 80-33, with 3:12 left. SU scored five of the last seven points to make the final score 82-38.
Syracuse will try to snap its seven-game losing streak when it plays at Seton Hall on Saturday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m.
