Orangewomen Lose Two at Fiesta Bowl Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Syracuse softball team began the 2004 season with a pair of losses at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Arizona State University. The Orangewomen lost 5-3 to Nevada and 11-1 to fifth-ranked Washington in five innings.
Junior outfielder Tanya Rose had two hits and scored two runs in the opener. It was her 35th multi-hit effort in 89 career games. Junior outfielder Tiffany Robinson recorded the first hit of her SU career in the first inning against the Wolf Pack. She is the fourth player in school history to notch a base hit in her first plate appearance as an Orangewoman. Robinson also stole two bases. Sophomore shortstop Alexis Switenko drove in two of the three Orangewomen runs.
Junior Haley Larsen was the losing pitcher for the Orangewomen against Nevada (3-3). Larsen went three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Freshman Courtney Mosch made her collegiate debut in relief. Mosch threw two and one-third innings without allowing a run. She struck out two and walked one, giving up a pair of hits. Tiffany Hoeft (2-1) was the winner, while Robyn Ford-Feitz earned her first save of the season.
Senior Rachel Park led the Syracuse offense against Washington (5-1) with three hits. Robinson, Rose and Switenko also had hits for the Orangewomen.
Mosch made her first collegiate start against Washington. She suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. She struck out three and walked eight. Tia Bollinger (3-1) was the winner for the Huskies.
The catching tandem of juniors Katie Kaempfer held opposing baserunners in check in both games. Kaempfer picked off a pair of Nevada runners at first base and threw out a runner at third attempting to steal. Grillo was 1-for-1 in throwing out would-be base stealers against the Huskies.
Nevada took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jiliane Hartfiel led off the game with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch. Stephanie Grant drove in the Wolf Pack’s second run with a single through the middle. Lindsey Hall, who reached on a single, plated the third run on a successful double steal.
The Orangewomen trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning. Rose led off the inning with a double and went to third when Robinson’s sacrifice bunt was bobbled by the Nevada third baseman. Park was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Switenko drove in the Orangewomen’s first run of the season with a grounder to shortstop. Robinson plated the second run on a wild pitch.
Brittany Lorenzen got the two runs back for Nevada with a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Orangewomen came back with a run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-3. Switenko drove in her second run of the game with a two-out single. SU put the tying run on base with no outs in the top of the seventh, but could not score a run, leaving two runners on. Syracuse stranded seven runners, including five in scoring position, in the contest.
The Huskies took control of the second game with seven runs in the top of the third. Washington loaded the bases on three walks and Kathy Fiske dropped a bloop single into center to drive in the first run of the game. Amanda Oleson followed with a two-run double to left field to extend Washington’s lead to 3-0. Dena Tyson then dumped a single into right field to make it 4-0 and Sarah Hyatt made it 5-0 with an RBI double down the left field line. The Huskies plated their sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Jeffries. Dominique LaStrapes reached for the second time in the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0. Washington plated its eighth run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Robyn Wike and pushed its lead to 9-0 on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Callie Bergan. The 10th run of the game was unearned on an SU error with two outs and the bases loaded. Run number 11 scored when Jeffries was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Orangewomen scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Hits by Rose and Park put runners on second and third with one out. Rose scored her third run of the day on an error by the Huskies’ third baseman.
The fifth-ranked Huskies were the highest-rated team the Orangewomen have played in the five-year history of the program.
Syracuse will play two games on Saturday, facing #23/21 Fresno State at 4 p.m. eastern time and #20/23 Arizona State at 6 p.m. eastern time.
