
No. 13 Syracuse Rallies from Four-Goal Deficit to Upset No. 3 Virginia, 14-13

Syracuse trailed by as many as four goals three times in the game and twice in the second half, but scored six of the contest’s last seven goals to earn the win.
With Virginia leading 12-8, SU netted four goals in the span of 7:11 to tie the contest, 12-12, at 48:16. Zimmer scored three of the Orangewomen’s four goals during the rally. The Cavaliers re-gained a one-goal lead when Cary Chasney took a feed from Nikki Lieb and found the back of the net at 50:07, but sophomore Meghan O'Connell tied the score, 13-13, when scored at 54:05. Junior Monica Joines assisted on the play and Joines notched the game-winner with 3:13 left in the contest.
Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, paced SU with a career-high seven points on a personal-best six goals and one assist. She now has 125 goals in her career, two shy of Katrina Hable’s school record of 127. Joines finished with four points (two goals, one assist) and added four ground balls. Senior Danielle Lillis contributed a hat trick sophomore Melody Agnew tallied the first two points of her career with a goal and an assist. Freshman Jill DePetris netted a goal in her first collegiate game and sophomore Jennifer Kasel made her first career start in goal and played all 60 minutes. Kasel finished with 12 saves.
Virgnia got the scoreboard early when Courtney Young converted a free-position attempt 26 seconds in to the game to the Cavaliers a 1-0 edge. The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Amy Appelt at 1:20, but Zimmer got SU in the scoring column when she beat Virginia goalie Andrea Pfeiffer at 3:42. After the two teams traded tallies, the Cavaliers scored the next three goals of contest to take a 6-2 advantage at 11:26. Chasney recorded two goals during the scoring spurt, but SU rebounded and scored the next four goals to knot the game, 6-6, at the half. The Cavaliers opened the second period with four straight goals to extend their margin to 10-6 at the 37:18 mark. The Orangewomen got goals from Lillis and Joines to cut Virginia’s lead in half, but the Cavaliers responded with goals by Julie Hauser and Appelt to push its margin back to four and set the stage for SU’s final rally.
Appelt led the Cavaliers with five points (four goals, one assist). Chasney finished with four points (three goals, one assist) and won six draw controls. Young contributed a hat trick for Virginia and Pfeiffer made 10 saves in goal.
It’s the second straight year the Orangewomen have began the season by beating the Cavaliers. SU posted a 12-11 (OT) win in the Carrier Dome against Virginia last season. The Orangewomen have won the last three pairings with the Cavaliers to tie the all-time series, 3-3.
The Orangewomen will meet their second-consecutive top-five ACC foe when they host No. 2 Maryland in their home-opener on March 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
