SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer became SU’s all-time leading goal scorer with three tallies, including two in the second half, as the seventh-ranked Orangewomen (1-1, 0-0) rallied from a 10-3 halftime deficit to pull within one goal of tying No. 3 Maryland (2-1, 0-1), before bowing to the Terrapins, 14-11, on Wednesday, March 3.
Zimmer now has 128 goals in her SU career, passing Katrina Hable who previously held the school record with 127 goals scored from 1998-2001. Zimmer also added an assist versus the Terrapins. She has 170 career points, 13 shy of tying Hable for that mark as well.
Trailing by seven at the intermission, the Orangewomen scored seven of the game’s next eight goals to pull within one, 11-10, at the 51:42 mark. Senior Danielle Lillis, junior Monica Joines and Zimmer each scored twice in the rally. Maryland’s Delia Cox found the back of the net at 52:36 to extend the Terrapins lead to two, but the Orangewomen came right back as Lillis recorded her third goal of the match at 54:31. On the Orangewomen’s ensuing possession, sophomore Melody Agnew scored what appeared to be the game-tying goal, but it was wiped out as she was called for a crease violation. The penalty gave the ball to Maryland and Cox tallied the Terrapins’ final two goals to seal the win.
Joines and Lillis also recorded hat tricks in the match for the Orangewomen. Joines now has 63 career points, tying her with Karen Healy for seventh all-time. She is also one goal behind Erica Hofmann for eighth on the career goals chart. Lillis moved into ninth place all-time with 58 career points. Freshman Jill DePetris started her second straight game and recorded three assists. She also contributed six ground balls. Sophomore Jennifer Kasel started in goal for SU and played 52:31. She made seven saves, all of which came in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Bethel Steele saw the first minutes of her career, playing 7:29 between the pipes in the first period. Steele finished with one save.
Cox paced the Terrapins with six goals, while Kelly Coppedge finished with five points on one goal and four assists. Coppedge also added three ground balls and five draw controls. Syracuse native Katie Doolittle added two goals for Maryland.
The two teams traded tallies early, but Maryland notched three straight to take a 4-1 advantage at 12:04. A goal by Agnew stopped the Terrapins run, but Maryland scored the next five to take a commanding 9-2 lead, before the Orangwomen climbed back into the contest.
Maryland holds a 7-0 advantage in the all-time series.
The Orangewomen will begin BIG EAST competition whey they host No. 4 Georgetown on Saturday, March 13.
