Hernandez Leads Syracuse at Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Junior Johvonne Hernandez followed up her second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship with three top-three finishes in SU's first outdoor meet of the season, the Hurricane Invitational, on Saturday, March 20.
Hernandez won the discus with a NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 48.61 meters. She placed second in the shot put, with an NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 14.48 meters, and she finished third in the hammer throw with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 49.74 meters.
The Orangemen boasted three top-three finishes. Sophomore Brien Flewelling finished second in the high jump with a BIG EAST-qualifying mark of 1.97 meters. Junior Chris Telesford was the runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 13.67 meters, and freshman Brian Allen finished third in that event with a leap of 13.59 meters. Both student-athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship with their performances in the triple jump.
In his first outdoor competition, freshman Aulton Kohn finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with an IC4A-qualifying time of 21.63. Brian McNeil placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in a time of 8:56.97, and Nathan Rath finished seventh in 9:00.57. Graduate student Steve Bedard placed fourth in the shot put with a BIG EAST-qualifying mark of 15.55 meters. Freshmen Daniel Pribula and Matthew Glowacki finished fifth and sixth in the shot put, respectively, and seventh and fifth in the hammer throw, respectively.
In addition to Hernandez, the Orangewomen turned in three other top-three performances. Junior Tatiana Warren finished third in the long jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 5.91 meters, just 0.02 meters short of the NCAA Regional mark. Senior LaNae Walker placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:02.30. In the javelin, freshman Kristen Lunetta qualified for the ECAC Championship and finished third with a throw of 40.81 meters.
Graduate student Aprelle Watkins began her sixth and final year of competition with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a NCAA Regional-qualifying leap of 12.69 meters. Senior Valerie Boling placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a BIG EAST-qualifying time of 56.41, and freshman Candace Ince finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.67. Freshman Katie Simon placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:06.96, and Mandi Hicks and Gabby Charbonneau joined her in the top 10. Freshman Sheron Mark placed sixth in the long jump with a BIG EAST-qualifying leap of 5.66 meters, and sophomore Jessyca Jackson finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing 3.20 meters.
Syracuse next competes at the Raleigh Relays, March 26-27, in Raleigh, N.C.
