Orangewomen Win War on the Shore Championship

GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Syracuse softball team won its second tournament championship of the season, finishing the Mizuno War at the Shore hosted by Delaware State with a 5-0 record. SU defeated Delaware, 10-6, to advance to the championship game and knocked off Providence, 4-0, in the title game. The Orangewomen have won a season-best five consecutive games and now stand at 14-14 on the season.
Five Orangewomen earned tournament honors. Junior Tanya Rose was named the Most Valuable Player after hitting .526 (10-for-19) with nine runs scored, three RBI, three home runs and four doubles. Rose had at least one hit in all five games to extend her hitting streak to a school-record 12 games, breaking the record previously held by Rachel Park.
Freshman Courtney Mosch was the Most Valuable Pitcher, going 4-0, including a shutout in the championship game. Mosch amassed a 0.65 ERA, striking out 16 in 21 and two-thirds innings. She limited opponents to a .143 batting average in the tournament. Mosch was also effective at the plate, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with five runs, seven RBI and the first two home runs of her career.
Park and sophomores Alexis Switenko and Cassie Morales were each named to the all-tournament team. Park hit .500 (9-for-18) with eight runs scored and three driven in. Switenko led the team with a .533 average (8-for-15). She scored six runs, hit one home run and drove in seven. Morales hit .450 (9-for-20) with two doubles, two homers and six knocked in.
The Orangewomen overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit to defeat Delaware. The Orangewomen scored two in the third inning and plated three more in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 advantage. The Blue Hens scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead at 6-5, but SU exploded for five runs in the sixth to set the margin of victory. Mosch drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded walk.
Switenko paced the comeback with three hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in, including a solo home run in the third inning and an RBI in the sixth. Rose had two hits, scored twice and also belted a solo shot in the third. Morales had a three-hit game with a run scored, while junior Katie Kaempfer had two hits and drove in a run. Mosch went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, while juniors Tiffany Robinson and Melissa Kelly each had an RBI.
Mosch was the winning pitcher, throwing two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. She allowed one hit and struck out two.
The Orangewomen took the tournament title with a 4-0 shutout of BIG EAST rival Providence. Mosch (9-9) tossed her third complete-game shutout of the season, allowing only three hits, none until the sixth inning. She struck out four and walked one.
Rose led the offense with two hits, including a solo home run in the second inning. She also scored SU’s first run of the game in the top of the first, coming around on a Providence error after starting the frame with a double. Senior Nikki Lincoln provided the insurance for the Orangewomen, driving in two runs with a single in the bottom of the sixth. Junior catcher Jaime Grillo also doubled in the game.
The Orangewomen are off for 10 days before beginning conference action at home against Boston College on Friday, April 2.
