BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Johvonne Hernandez won the weight throw at the ECAC Championship to lead the Orangewomen track and field team to a 13th-place finish out of 45 teams.
Hernandez has won the weight throw at every meet she has competed in this season, giving her five titles in 2004. Her throw of 19.65 meters at the ECAC Championship is her best of the season and just 0.15m short of the NCAA Automatic-qualifying mark. It also surpasses the school record, which Hernandez established last season.
SU received its other points from Tatiana Warren, who recorded a jump of 5.80m and a sixth-place finish in the long jump, and placed fifth with a leap of 12.02m in the triple jump. Freshman Sheron Mark placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.97m. She placed 18th in the long jump with a jump of 5.37m.
Sophomore Kristen Michalski also competed in the weight throw for the Orange. She finished 11th with a throw of 16.33m. Junior Jenna Grimaldi placed 10th in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m. LaNae Walker ran the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:17.62 to place 30th in the preliminaries.
Hernandez and Grimaldi have each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in their respective events. They will find out in the coming week if they will be invited to compete in the national meet, which will be held March 12-13, in Fayetteville, Ark.
