No. 17 Orangemen Battle for Goes Trophy in Crew
4/16/2004 9:05:36 AM | Men's Rowing
The Goes Trophy was dedicated in 1955 by Clifford "Tip" Goes, a 1914 Syracuse graduate. The trophy honors coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Every year since 1955, the three schools have competed for the trophy, which is presented to the winner of the varsity eight race. Last year, the three schools competed on Syracuse's Onondaga Lake where Navy was victorious. The last time Syracuse won the Goes Trophy was in 1999, which marked the seventh time in the 48-year history of the trophy that the Orangemen have been victorious.
Four members of last season's varsity eight, Kevin Boyle, Andrew Wright, Bryan Goody and Chip Gibson, will be competing in this year's race. The remaining four members of the varsity eight will be Andrew Cooley, Terry Wilkin, Justin Burgess and Dan O'Shaughnessy, and the crew will be coxed by Dan McManus.
Cornell and Navy will participate in a third varsity eight race at 6:40 a.m. The battle for the Goes Trophy between the varsity eights starts at 7:00 a.m., and the JV eights race at 7:20. The regatta will end with freshman eight race, starting at 7:40 a.m.
