VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Syracuse softball team lost both ends of its doubleheader at Villanova on Sunday, April 25. The Wildcats were victorious 2-0 in the opener and 3-1 in game two. The Orangewomen are now 19-23 overall and 3-7 in the BIG EAST. Villanova improved to 27-18 overall and 11-5 in league play.
Freshman Courtney Mosch was the tough-luck loser for the Orangewomen in game one. Mosch (13-12) allowed only one earned run on four hits in six innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. Villanova’s Kristen Haynes (10-8) stymied the SU bats, tossing a complete-game four-hitter. Haynes struck out eight without a walk.
Juniors Tanya Rose and Tiffany Robinson, sophomore Alexis Switenko and freshman Erin Gray recorded SU’s hits in the opening game. All four hits were singles. Rose also registered her seventh stolen base of the season in nine attempts.
The Orangewomen had three extra-base hits in the second game. Switenko, Rose and Robinson accounted for three of the Orangewomen’s six in game two with doubles. Sophomore Cassie Morales had two singles and an RBI, while freshman Dani Delgado contributed a hit and a stolen base.
Senior Haley Larsen took the loss in game two. She pitches six innings and allowed three runs, only one earned. Larsen (6-11) struck out one and walked one, giving up eight hits. Shannon Williams was the winner for the Wildcats. Williams (17-10) scattered six hits, striking out seven and walking one.
Game one featured standout pitching by both teams. Haynes retired the first nine Orangewomen until Rose broke through in the fourth with a single. Mosch allowed just one infield hit in her first three innings.
Villanova broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs. A single, an error and a sacrifice put two runners in scoring position with one out and Sarah Wall delivered a two-run single to center.
Syracuse threatened in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back one-out singles and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, but Haynes came back to record consecutive strikeouts.
The Orangewomen scored first in the nightcap, plating a run in the top of the first. Rose led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by senior Rachel Park. Morales drove in the run with a ground out.
Villanova came back in its half of the inning with three runs, two of them unearned. Ricci Lugo drove in the first run with a bases-loaded single. A wild pitch allowed the Wildcats to take a 2-1 lead, and the second SU error of the inning plated the third run of the frame.
The Orangewomen return home for four doubleheaders next week beginning with a conference twin bill against Connecticut on Tuesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. SU faces Penn State on the 28th, Pittsburgh on the 30th and Virginia Tech on May 2.
