Three SU Boats Finish Second in the Petite Finals at the Eastern Sprints

CAMDEN N.J. -- The Orangewomen rowing team ended its 2004 campaign by having three of its four boats earn second place finishes in the petite finals at the Eastern Sprints held on the Cooper River on Sunday, May 9.

The Orangewomen’s junior varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four all claimed second place in the petite final of their respective races. SU’s junior varsity eight posted a time of 7:00.40 in the open second varsity eight petite final. Pennsylvania won the race with a time of 6:51.33, while Brown took home the crown in the grand final of the competition, recording a time of 6:31.02.

In the open third varsity four "A", the Orangewomen crossed the finish line in 7:54.37, approximately six seconds behind Boston University which won the petite final with a time of 7:48.60. Cornell won the competition’s grand final with a mark of 7:23.73.

Syracuse’s second varsity four finished with a time of 8:15.48 in the petite final of the open third varsity four "B" race. Boston College won the petite final (8:13.90) and Rutgers placed third (8:20.71). Cornell won the event’s grand final, completing the course in 7:48.80.

The 19th-ranked Syracuse varsity eight struggled on Sunday. The Orangewomen finished fourth in the petite final of the open varsity eight competition. SU recorded a time of 6:44.60. Columbia won the race with a time of 6:37.60, while Cornell placed second (6:41.97) and Dartmouth claimed third (6:42.83). The second-ranked Princeton Tigers won the event’s grand final, holding off Radcliffe to win the race by a second.

SU’s varsity eight finished the season with a 5-5 mark.
