The Syracuse University crew program finished 12th out of 58 teams at the 2004 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship held June 3-5 on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. SU brought home the first-ever Clayton Chapman Trophy for its improvement in the Ten Eyck scoring from last year. The Orange scored 144.8 points, which is an increase of 122.3 from its 2003 performance. The Clayton Chapman Trophy was initiated by friends of Chapman to celebrate his 50th year of association with the sport as an oarsman at Cornell, a coach and an administrator. The trophy will be presented annually to the program that has the most improvement in the Ten Eyck scoring from the previous year.
SU's freshman eight finished second in the petite final with a time of 6:24.31. The second varsity eight crossed the finish line fifth in the petite final (6:28.46) and the varsity eight was third in the third level final (6:16.86).
