SYRACUSE N.Y. – Syracuse senior Stephanie Sybert scored the game-winning goal 32 seconds into the first overtime period to give the Orange a 2-1 victory versus the Big Green. This is only the second time in seven meetings that Syracuse has beaten Dartmouth, avenging a 3-2 double overtime loss last season. The Orange moves to 5-2-1, 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while Dartmouth is 3-2-2.
The Orange applied immediate pressure to start the overtime period. SU forced a Dartmouth turnover and began its counter-attack. Senior Helen Fox carried the ball to the end line and played it to the middle, where Sybert fired it into the back of the net. The goal was Sybert’s first of the season and Fox’s second assist on the year.
The Orange opened the scoring in the 19th minute on a pass by junior Brooke DeRosa to senior Shana Thomas, who out-ran the defense and beat the goalie low on the left side.
The Orange held the lead for much of the game, before Ashley Carruth netted the game’s equalizer with 5:31 left to play in regulation.
SU had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, but they were out-shot 19-8. Senior goalkeeper Shannon Myers registered eight saves for the day. She is now 20 saves shy of taking over first place in the SU record book. Dartmouth goalie Anne Marbarger had two saves on the day. The Orange entered the game ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA Northeast Region poll, while Dartmouth was ranked No. 3 in the same poll.
The Orange travels to Albany on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m., before hosting BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
