SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse senior Shana Thomas scored with 6:16 remaining in the game to give the Orange (3-0-0) a 2-1 win Friday night over the visiting Colgate Raiders(2-1-0).
After Colgate goalkeeper Luisa Miller left the net and misplayed the ball, Thomas was able to take it away and hit the empty net for the game-winner, her second goal of the season. The game-winning goal came less than four minutes after Colgate evened the score at one. Franny Iacuzzi netted the game-tying goal at the 79:45 mark.
SU opened the scoring just 3:44 into the contest as senior captain Helen Fox took a nice pass from senior Stephanie Sybert and found some room in front of the net. Fox fired the ball from the left side of the goal into the right side netting, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead. The goal was Fox’s first of the season and Sybert’s first assist as well. The Orange out-shot the Raiders 14-7.
The Orange held the 1-0 lead for just over 76 minutes until Colgate answered and tied the score, setting the stage for Thomas’ heroics.
Senior goalie Shannon Myers recorded two saves in the win, while Miller had six saves.
SU travels to the Michigan Tournament next weekend to meet Michigan on Friday, Sept. 10 and Oakland University on Sunday, Sept. 12. Both teams made the NCAA Tournament last season.
