SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team lost its second straight game, 2-1 versus Adelphi, on Sunday, Sept. 5 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange is now 0-2-0 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 1-1-0.
For the second straight game, an Orange freshman tallied their first career goal. Redshirt freshman Isaac Collings found the back of the net for the first time to put SU ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute. Collings took a corner kick for the Orange, bending the ball to the back post and beating Adelphi goalkeeper Peter Ruff.
Syracuse remained ahead until the 44th minute. Matt Smith knotted the score at 1-1 when he beat SU keeper Rich Scheer to the lower-left corner of the goal. Tal Sheinfeld started the play off a quick re-start. He played the ball forward to Deiudonne Nonga, who crossed it to Smith for the equalizer.
Sheinfeld netted the game-winner for the Panthers in the 73rd minute. He beat Scheer to his left off a feed from Nonga. Syracuse pressured the Adelphi defense for the remainder of the game, but couldn’t find the net. Ruff stopped two one-on-one opportunities, while several other SU shots sailed just high.
The Orange outshot the Panthers, 13-9, and held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Adelphi took only one shot in the second half which resulted in the game-winning goal.
Scheer made three saves for Syracuse in his first start of the season. Ruff was the winning keeper with five saves for the Panthers.
Syracuse has now lost two straight at home for the first time since 2000. It was SU’s third straight loss by one goal, dating back to last season.
The Orange plays its first road game of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 8, traveling to Cornell. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
