Tennis Begins Spring Against Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team begins its spring dual-match season on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when it hosts the Colgate Red Raiders at 6:30 p.m. at Drumlins Tennis Center.

The Orange returns five student-athletes from last season, one junior and four sophomores, and welcomes five freshmen to the squad. This is the first time since the 1990-91 season that Syracuse has not had a senior on the team.

Junior Wei-Ming Leong returns for her third season for the Orange. Leong had a career-best year in 2003-04, in which she compiled a 35-26 record. She had 20 doubles win, which tied her for the team lead.”

Gifford’s sophomore class is led by Ashley Lipton, who played primarily at the number-two singles position for the Orange last season. Lipton had a stellar freshman campaign in which she led the Orange with 43 overall victories, 25 of which came in singles matches and 18 in doubles matches.

Katie Bramante returns for the Orange after being hampered by injury late last season. Bramante earned nine singles wins and eight doubles victories for SU.

Sophomore Carolina Huignard hopes to build on a strong freshman year which included a 20-14 overall record. Last season, she had the highest winning percentage on the team in doubles matches, posting 12 wins in 17 matches.

Sophomore Kendyl Severino is the final returnee for SU. Severino had a seven-win season between singles and doubles matches in 2003-04. A season ago, Severino competed in the four, five and six singles positions for the Orange.

Syracuse adds five new names to its roster. Freshmen Jessica Juricek, Pearly Leung, Ali Thorell, Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki are all looking to contribute to the Orange’s attack this season.

The Orange will travel to Dartmouth for the match on Jan. 29. The match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
