The SU football team is 2-0, and the men’s soccer team is 4-0 in the Loud House on this date, giving SU programs a perfect 6-0 mark on this date in the Dome. The football team’s last win came against a 10th-ranked Virginia Tech team in 1994, 28-20. The Orange also beat Maryland in 1988, 20-9.
In 1994, the football team faced 10th-ranked Virginia Tech in a BIG EAST thriller, coming out on top 28-20. Tech’s defense allowed just 8.5 points and 200 yards per game on average coming into the Carrier Dome, where the Orange racked up 461 yards. SU jumped out to a 14-3 lead by the second quarter as Kirby Dar Dar scored twice to add to the performance that earned him honors as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. After the break, the Hokies answered back by rattling off 17 straight points to take a 20-14 lead. With 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, Dar Dar took a pitch to the left side of the line and ran 34 yards for his third touchdown of the day. Malcolm Thomas sealed the win, rushing 42-yards down the middle of the field for the final touchdown.
In 1988, the football team shut down a talented Maryland offense, preventing it from scoring a single touchdown in a 20-9 victory. Game MVP Terry Wooden led the defensive effort with 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Other defensive standouts included David Bavaro with ten tackles and Markus Paul, who intercepted his 17th career pass. SU showed its versatility, scoring twice on rushing touchdowns from the Maryland doorstep and twice on long field goals.
In 1995, the men’s soccer team shut out Big East rival UConn 1-0, improving their record to 5-2-1 overall. SU goalkeeper Josh McGibbon recorded four saves, including one diving, for his third shutout of the season. The win continued the Orange’s three-game streak and was the first men’s soccer victory against Connecticut since 1988.
In 1991, SU goalie Steve Pollnow recorded his sixth career shut out as the men’s soccer team beat Cornell, 2-0. Syracuse juniors Paul Young and Eric Puls each scored during the match, including a fast break goal with 45 seconds remaining when Puls received a feed from freshman Richard Alexander and fired it past the Cornell goalkeeper from five yards out.
The men’s soccer team shut out Hobart 2-0 in front of 301 fans to improve their overall record to 6-3-1 in 1985. Senior Ken Vieira and sophomore Mark DiMonte each contributed one goal. Vieira’s was his eighth on the season and stretched his lead as the team’s top scorer.
In the first men’s soccer game held in the Dome on this date, SU edged Oneonta 2-1 to even their record up to 4-4 and avenge the previous year’s 1-1 overtime tie. Starting goalie Rick Fatscher sprained an ankle and did not play. In his place, Scott Turner allowed just one goal, the only score of his first two games in the net.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
