ALBANY, N.Y. -- Tina Bryson registered her sixth goal of the season just 44 seconds into overtime to lift the University at Albany field hockey team to a 2-1 victory against Syracuse at Alumni Turf Field. It was the first-ever win for the Great Danes in the series with the Orange, which was established in 1999 and has spanned seven games.
The two teams played through a scoreless first half. Junior forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) gave the Orange a 1-0 lead just 2:25 into the second period with her team-leading ninth goal of the season. It marked the third consecutive game in which Fry has scored a goal. It was the 15th tally of her career.
Syracuse (7-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) held on to its 1-0 lead until a little more than 10 minutes remainined in the contest. Albany's Kristen Holder knotted the score at 1-1 after finishing a pass from Arlette Westdorp. It was Holder's sixth goal of the season.
Albany (5-8, 0-2 America East) outshot Syracuse, 15-8. Orange goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who was named the BIG EAST and ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week after helping SU defeat Colgate and Villanova last week, had six saves against the Great Danes. Ashley Ross stopped three Syracuse shots.
The Orange forced seven penalty corners in the second half and held a 9-7 edge in this category for the game. Neither team had a chance to earn a penalty corner in overtime.
SU will have to regroup quickly for an important BIG EAST Conference game at Providence on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
