SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men’s soccer team will meet its fifth ranked opponent of 2005 when BIG EAST newcomer Cincinnati visits the SU Soccer Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Bearcats are currently ranked 18th in both the NSCAA/adidas rankings and the Soccer Times national poll.
The Orange can finish no higher than third in the BIG EAST Red Division. The most total points it can accumulate is 16 if it wins its remaining four league contests. South Florida currently leads the division with 18 points, while Cincinnati is sitting in third place with 14.
Syracuse is 5-6-2 overall on the season and 1-5-1 in BIG EAST play. It’s coming off a 2-0 loss to New York Region rival Oneonta State on Oct. 12. The Orange led statistically in almost every category against the Red Dragons, but could not convert on any of its scoring chances.
The Orange is leading the conference in corner kicks per game at 6.23 and ranks third in the league in team goals-against average at 0.81. SU has outshot its opponents this season, 150-124.
Syracuse has played well at home in 2005 with all five of its victories coming at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange is 45-33-6 all-time at the facility and has won 140 home games in its history, including 69 triumphs in the Carrier Dome and 26 on Coyne Field.
Cincinnati is 7-4-2 overall and is 4-1-2 in league play. The Bearcats have lost their last two games, versus Oakland on Oct. 12 and St. John’s on Oct. 8. Prior to those two defeats, Cincinnati had won its last five matches. The Bearcats are 4-1-1 in road contests this year.
Cincinnati sophomore Kenny Anaba scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season against Oakland and has scored in five of the team’s last six matches. Bearcats' goalkeeper Mike Vessells allowed more than one goal in a match for the third time this season against Oakland. On the year, Vessells has 50 saves, the third-highest total in the league and he has notched three shutouts.
Saturday’s tilt is the first meeting between the two clubs. The Orange is 1-1 in 2005 against teams it played for the first time. SU knocked off South Florida on Oct. 9, but lost at DePaul on Oct. 1. The Orange have one more game against an unfamiliar foe, Oct. 22 at Louisville.
Admission for Saturday night’s match versus Cincinnati is free and gates will open at approximately 6:00 p.m.
