Women's Soccer Loses, 3-2, in Overtime

NEWARK N.J.- The Syracuse women’s soccer team lost to Seton Hall, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday. Karrah Benson (Germantown, Md.) scored her first career goal in the contest, while Molly McManus (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season.
Seton Hall struck first when Oriana Nierojewski scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute. SU was quick to respond with McManus scoring an unassisted goal in the 40th minute when she fired a shot from 18 yards out that crawled under the crossbar.
Nierojewski put the Pirates back on top as the first half wound down, scoring her second goal of the game. Ashley Reinecke earned the assist by finding Nierojewski in the box. SHU held a 2-1 lead going into the half.
Seton Hall out shot the Orange 9-3 in the first half, while Syracuse held a slight, 3-1, edge in corner kick opportunities.
SU knotted the score late in the second half when Benson headed a shot into the goal off a Lauren Cappelli (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) corner kick. It was Cappelli’s third assist of the season tying her with teammate Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.) for the 10th highest assist total by a freshman in school history.
Time expired with the score locked at 2-2.
In overtime, Seton Hall’s Rita Massot scored her fifth goal of the season when she headed in a crossing pass from Nierojewski with just over two minutes remaining to give the Pirates the 3-2 victory.
Syracuse goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) made nine saves in the game moving her to third all-time at SU in career saves with 175.
Seton Hall improves to 7-6-3, 3-5-1 in the BIG EAST, with the win, while Syracuse drops to 3-10-4, 2-4-3 in the BIG EAST.
SU will play again on Friday, Oct. 21 when it travels to take on Marquette at 7 p.m.
