PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, and junior midfielder Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) was selected to the league’s weekly honor roll for their performances in SU’s upset of #18 Cincinnati, the conference announced on Monday, Oct. 17.
Cavicchia made a career-high 11 saves against the Bearcats, including six in the second half, and also made a stop against Oneonta on Oct. 12 to finish the week with 12 saves. He has 54 saves on the year and owns a 0.78 goals-against average, which is on pace to be the second-best mark in team history for a rookie, and the fourth-best single-season total overall. Cavicchia holds a .831 save percentage and has five shutouts. His selection marks the second straight week Cavicchia has been honored by the conference. He appeared on last week’s honor roll.
Asante scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on Saturday against Cincinnati. With the Orange ahead, 1-0, Asante stole the ball in the midfield and then lifted a high shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the head of Cincinnati’s keeper Mike Vessels to give SU a two-goal cushion at the 6:32 mark. It was Asante’s second golden goal of 2005. He tallied the difference maker in SU’s season-opening triumph against Marist, as well.
The Orange is 6-6-2 overall this season and it will meet Patriot League foe Colgate at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the match is free and gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
