SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team played 110 thrilling minutes against Colgate, posting a 1-1 draw versus the Raiders in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Raiders tied the game with 32 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. SU had two great scoring chances, one in each extra session, to notch the golden goal, but was turned away on both. Syracuse is now 6-6-3 overall this season and the Raiders moved to 7-4-3.
With the Orange ahead 1-0, Colgate coach Erik Ronning attempted to extend the match by subbing to stop the clock in the last five minutes of the contest. The strategy paid off as Bryant Meckley was in the right place at the right time. The ball found the senior alone in the box after a scramble in front of the SU net and he banged home the equalizer at 89:28 to send the match into OT.
In the first overtime period, the Orange outshot the Raiders, 4-0, and freshman Eric Kleiman (Reading, Pa.), who netted his first career goal earlier in the match, almost scored the game-winner, but his shot from 30 yards out was stopped by a diving Doug Litvack as time ran out. Kleiman had another opportunity to win it for the Orange in second extra frame, but Litvack made another sprawling save in the 104th minute to preserve the tie.
Syracuse came out and dominated play in the first half on Tuesday, ripping seven of its first eight shots on goal and outshooting the Raiders, 10-5, in the first period. Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) paced SU in the opening period with three shots on goal.
The Orange broke through in the 55th minute when three freshmen combined to give SU a 1-0 edge. Rookie Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) slipped a pass to a streaking Kleiman, who booted a shot from the left side of the box into the upper right-hand corner of the net to put SU in front at 54:50. The score marked the first points of Kleiman’s collegiate career. Freshman Jimmy Linus (Blue Bell, Pa.), who fed Schomaker to start the play, also registered an assist on the goal for his first career point.
The Orange actually thought it scored the go-ahead goal two minutes earlier, but a free kick by sophomore Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.) that sailed into the net was waved off because of an SU foul.
Colgate ratcheted up the offensive pressure for the rest of the second half in an attempt to tie the contest, but SU was up the challenge consistently clearing serves out to the midfield until finally the Raiders got a break on Meckley's goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario), who earlier in the day was named the ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week, turned in another stellar performance for the Orange, making nine saves. Litvack finished with 12 stops for the Raiders.
SU outshot Colgate, 20-14, for the game, and the Raiders held the edge in corner kicks, 4-1.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST play on Saturday, Oct. 22 when it plays a crucial intra-division match at Louisville. The Cardinals are one point in front of Syracuse for the division’s final berth in the 2005 BIG EAST Championship, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 5. Kickoff for the Louisville contest is at 7:00 p.m.
