SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SU men’s soccer team will play a pivotal match at BIG EAST newcomer Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Orange is one point behind the Cardinals for the Red Division’s final berth in the conference championship tournament, which gets underway on Nov. 5.
The game is SU’s first road contest since it played at DePaul on Oct. 1 and marks the first time the Orange and Cardinals will meet on the pitch.
Syracuse is 6-6-3 overall after tying Colgate, and has two league victories and one tie for a total of seven points. Louisville enters the pairing 5-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in BIG EAST competition. The Cardinals have eight points.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) had quite a week for the Orange. Against Colgate on Oct. 18, he stopped nine shots, two short of his career high. Earlier in the week, he was selected as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, the ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week and named to Soccer America’s National Team of the Week for his performance in SU’s win versus Cincinnati on Oct. 15.
Classmate Eric Kleiman (Reading, Pa.) also had a solid game Tuesday for the Orange, scoring his first career goal and sparking the SU offense off the bench versus the Raiders with three shots on goal.
The Cardinals are coming off a 1-0 win against Belmont on Oct. 18. Sophomore David Guzman recorded the golden goal for Louisville in the match, scoring in the 21st minute. Guzman ranks second on the Cardinals with nine points. Frank Jonke leads the club with 17 points (six goals, five assists) and ranks sixth in the league in that category.
Louisville goalkeepers Charlie Edwards and Steven DeGeorge have shared time in the net this season. DeGeorge has played almost 740 minutes and Edwards has played 653. Edwards owns the better goals-against average at 1.10, while DeGeorge has made 42 saves to Edwards’ 22.
Follwing Saturday’s match against the Cardinals, the Orange has two regular season contests remaining. It plays at Rutgers (Oct. 26) and SU will host Villanova in the regular-season finale on Oct. 29.
