SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The SU men’s rowing team will travel to Princeton, N.J. to take part in the Princeton Chase on Sunday. The Orange will have six boats on the water this weekend, two in the eights race and four in the fours race.
SU sends a familiar crew in to the eights race with the varsity eight squad looking to post yet another strong results this season. The varsity eight boat finished fourth at the Stonehurst Invitational to open the season on Oct. 9 before following up that performance by finishing 14th out of 40 boats at the Head of the Charles last weekend.
Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman said that his team has prepared for this race just as it did for the first two, however there is some added emphasis on the Princeton Chase.
"The focus is still on making changes and physical preparations for the spring racing season," he said. "We just want to come out of fall racing with a sense that we are on track to compete well in the spring. This race is a little different from the first two because it is all college crews and a lot of crews that are from our league."
The JV eight will compete in its second race of the season after finishing ninth at the Stonehurst Invitational. The Orange will have four boats competing in the fours race most notably the crew of Dave Barone, Justin Stangel, Dan O’Shaughnessy and Chad Taylor.
SU will be competing on a simpler course this weekend after the Head of the Charles was a race that presented many technical challenges. The Princeton Chase is one that gives all teams a more fair shot according to Reischman.
"The reason we point toward the (Princeton) Chase for our fall racing is that the course doesn't present too many challenges and you are racing mostly college crews," he said. "Everyone gets a pretty fair shot down the race course at the Chase. There are a few turns but they are minor and the fact that the boats are more similar in speed minimizes any passing."
Following this weekend’s event, SU will host the Syracuse Fall Race on Nov. 5 to conclude its fall portion of the season.
