Men's Soccer Meets South Florida For The First Time Sunday
10/8/2005 11:18:36 AM | Men's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men’s soccer team (4-5-2, 0-5-1 BIG EAST) squares off against its second straight ranked opponent on Sunday, Oct. 9 when it meets #22 South Florida (6-3-0, 5-0-0 BIG EAST) at the SU Soccer Stadium at 12:00 p.m. The Bulls will be the fourth ranked foe to battle SU this season and the match marks the first time SU and South Florida will meet in men’s soccer.
The Orange defense continues to play well. Freshman keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) went over the 1,000-minute mark on the season against St. John’s. He allowed one goal versus the Red Storm and still owns a goals-against average of less than one (0.72), which ranks third in the conference. Syracuse has surrendered more than one goal just once this season and limited St. John’s to 10 shot attempts, most of which came from 30+ yards out.
On offense, SU has struggled. It hasn’t scored a goal in four games and has been held without a tally for the last 382 minutes and 11 seconds. The last time the Orange went four straight matches without a score was in 1996. The good news for SU is after being shutout four consecutive times nine years ago, Dean Foti’s squad won two out of its next three games and the Orange are one win away from moving into a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot in the BIG EAST Red Division pending the outcomes of Saturday’s matches.
South Florida enters Sunday’s clash ranked 22nd in the latest Soccer Times poll. The Bulls haven’t lost a conference match in this, their first year in the league, and are 6-3-0 on the season. South Florida hasn’t stepped on the pitch since defeating Villanova, 4-2, on Oct. 1. Its match against non-league rival Florida Atlantic scheduled for Oct. 4 was postponed due to inclement weather. Coach George Kiefer’s team is riding a five-game winning streak and South Florida hasn’t lost since Sept. 11 at SMU. The Bulls currently sit alone atop the Red Division standings.
South Florida is led by freshman Jordan Seabrook (7g,4a, 18 pts.) and sophomore Rodrigo Hidalgo (2g, 8a, 12 pts.). Seabrook, this week's BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, is tied for second in the league with seven goals. Goalkeeper Dane Brenner (6-3-0, 1.54 GAA) has won five-consecutive games, following the Bulls 4-2 victory over Villanova
(Oct. 1).
Admission to the match is free and gates to the SU Soccer Stadium will open at approximately 11:00 a.m. The Orange men’s contest is the first of a Sunday soccer doubleheader. The Syracuse women’s soccer team will take on Providence approximately 15 minutes after the conclusion of the men’s game.
