SU Loses to Providence, 1-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- SU held Providence to just two shots but the Friars made the most of them coming away with a 1-0 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday. SU had 13 shots on the day including five from Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.).
Providence’s Kelly Pettersen scored the games only goal just over nine minutes into the game on a corner kick opportunity. Ashley Amaral put the kick into play where Petterson was able to make her way through SU defenders to head in the go-ahead goal. It was one of two shots on goal for the Friars.
Syracuse held an 8-1 advantage in shots and corner kicks in the opening half but were unable to convert any of its opportunities into goals.
The second half saw Syracuse control the field much like the first with the Orange having a 5-1 advantage in shots and corners. SU goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) made her only save of the game in the second half.
Providence goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn earned the shutout in goal for the Friars making seven saves on the day.
Syracuse falls to 3-8-4, 2-2-3 in the BIG EAST, with the loss, while Providence improves to 4-7-2, 1-4-2 in the BIG EAST.
Sunday’s game was the final home game of the regular season for SU. A brief ceremony was held at halftime of the game honoring SU seniors Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Sheila Menz (Webster, N.Y.), Jenna Richter (Morristown, N.J.), Kowalczyk and Nikki Spartano (Syracuse, N.Y.).
The Orange will next be in action on Friday when it travels to play Rutgers at 7 p.m.
