CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The Syracuse men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began competition in the Nike Cup at the University of North Carolina on Thursday. After the first day of competition both the SU men and women are in 5th place.
Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) highlighted the day for the Orange finishing second in the 200-individual medley, while on the men’s side, Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) finished third in the 500-freestyle.
Persico finished the 500-freestyle in a time of 4:29.32 to place third, while teammate Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) finished ninth in that same race with a time of 4:32.36. In the 50-freestyle, Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) took seventh in a time of 20.93, while Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) finished eighth in the 200-individual medley in a time of 1:52.72.
In relay action, the Orange took sixth in the 200-freestyle relay with Persico, Caponera, Boral and Peter Gollands (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished the race in a time of 1:24.13.
On the women’s side, Duenas finished the 200-individual medley in a time of 2:04.44 to place second. Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario) finished seventh in the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.82, while Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) took 12th in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:59.86.
In the 200-freestyle relay, Melissa Clune (Bainbridge, Wash.), Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic), Sarah Manning (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Beaulieu finished fourth in a time of 1:35.74.
The Orange will resume competition in the Nike Cup on Friday with action concluding on Saturday.
