Field Hockey Signs Six Recruits

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University field hockey head coach Kathleen Parker announced that six recruits have signed National Letters of Intent. Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y./Spencer Van Etten H.S.), Cassie Barry (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge H.S.), Heather Doran (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon Central H.S.), Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick H.S.), Amanda Kanekuni (Frederick, Md./Frederick H.S.) and Brittany Shannon (Ronks, Pa./Conestoga Valley H.S.) will play for the Orange beginning in the 2005-06 school year.
Babbitt was a two-time captain of the Spencer Van Etten High School field hockey team. The forward earned all-state honors in 2003 and 2004 and was the Tioga County Athlete of the Year during those same years. She was named all-county three times and added all-region honors to her list of accolades in 2004. Babbitt has been a member of the Empire State Games Central team each of the past three seasons and was named to the Exceptional Senior All-Star Game. A member of the National Honor Society, Babbitt is also a four-year member of the track team.
Cassie Barry served as captain of the Ridge High School field hockey team. As a senior midfielder, she recorded 10 goals and 18 assists. For her career, she had 15 goals and 28 assists. Barry was named first-team all-state for Group III and was twice selected to the first-team All-Skyland Conference team and the first-team All-Somerset County squad. For the past three years, Barry has earned the Coaches’ MVP award. She was also a three-year member of her school’s lacrosse team.
Heather Doran was a four-year member of her school’s basketball, softball and field hockey teams. As a senior forward on the field hockey team, she recorded 10 goals and five assists. For her career, she totaled 59 goals and 36 assists. In each of her four years, she was a member of the NYS Section IV IAC Division Championship team, and she was a member of the gold-medal winning NYS Empire State Games team her last two years. As a junior, Doran scored the winning goal in a sudden death overtime championship game. That same year she received the honor of Offensive Player of the Year. In both her junior and senior years, she was named all-state, a Section IV first-team all-star, and North Region All American. She is a member of the National Honor Society.
Heather Hess, a goalie from Lititz Pa., served as captain for the Warwick High School field hockey team. As a senior, she set a school saves record, saving 164 out of 191 shots with 12 shutouts. For her career, she had an 87.2% save percentage and 19 shutouts. Hess was a member of her section, league and district championship teams in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Hess was named to the all-state second team, and in 2004 she earned first-team all-state honors.
Amanda Kanekuni served as captain of the Frederick High School championship field hockey team. Her senior year, she played forward and recorded nine goals, 10 assists and three defensive saves. In 2004, she was a member of two championship teams. In her senior year, Kanekuni received National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic All-America honors. Throughout her four years, she has earned the MVP, Coach’s award for Sportsmanship and Best Offensive Player awards. She is a member of the National Honor Society.
Brittany Shannon, a forward from Ronks, Pa., served as captain of the Conestoga Valley High School field hockey team. In her senior year, she scored 12 goals and had 11 assists. For her career, she recorded 30 goals and 24 assists. In 2004, Shannon was named a Lancaster/Lebanon League first-team all-star and the league MVP. In both 2003 and 2004, she earned her team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player award. Brittany’s aunt, Lynn Esbenshade McEvoy, played field hockey for SU from 1984-1987.
