Syracuse Wins Opener Against Albany 17-4

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The #12 Orange women's lacrosse team (1-0) won its season opener against Albany (1-2), 17-4, on Sunday, February 27. The Orange was led by junior attacker Melody Agnew (Winchester, Mass.) who recorded a career-high six points on career-highs for both goals (4) and assists (2).
Agnew got the Orange on the scoreboard first on a goal off a free position shot at 6:02 into the game. Senior co-captain Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) added two more goals for the Orange, giving Syracuse the 3-0 advantage 13:26 into the contest.
Sarah Spillett scored the first Albany goal 14:04 in the first half. The Orange then went on a 7-0 scoring run to end the half and led at halftime 11-1. Agnew scored three of SU’s goals during the run and senior co-captain Monica Joines (Whitehall, Md.) added two goals and an assist.
Syracuse continued its run into the second period scoring the first two goals of the half in the first two minutes. Syracuse led 15-3 as the clock hit the 59-minute mark when freshman Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) scored her first career goal.
Krissy Rajczak scored the final Great Dane goal at the 59:30 mark and Evelyn Long (Edgewater, N.J) scored her second goal of the contest with eight second to play.
Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) started in goal for the Orange recording five saves in 48:41 minutes of action.
Dragon’s three goals set a new career-high and Long recorded a career-high two goals. Sophomore Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) scored the first goal of her career.
Junior Meghan O’Connell (Camillus, N.Y.) added two goals and sophomore Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) scored one goal for the Orange. Freshman defender Stephanie Bissett (Woodstock, Md.) made her first start at Syracuse.
The Great Danes were led by Nikki Donohue who scored one goal and added one assist to lead Albany in points. Jen Daly played all 60 minutes at goal, making 11 saves.
Syracuse welcomes Binghamton to the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, March 2 for a 7:00 p.m. midweek matchup.
