Syracuse celebrated the 100th anniversary of SU football with a black-tie dinner in the Carrier Dome on September 15, 1989. SU played its first-ever game on November 23, 1889 against the University of Rochester. During the next 100 years, the Orange would go on to become the nation's 15th-winningest program.
The football Orange recorded its first-ever tie in the Dome on Septemeber 15, 1990. Michigan State's John Langeloh's 43-yard field goal as time expired resulted in a 23-23 tie. A sell-out crowd witnessed a game that featured four tied and three lead changes. SU quarterback Marvin Graves generated 201 yards of total offense for the Orange, while John Biskup connected on three field goals for the Orange, including a 27-yard effort with 1:25 remaining.
The SU men's soccer team won both of its games played twice in the Dome on September 12. In 1984, the Orange defeated Adelphi, 2-0, in its home opener. Syracuse also defeated Long Island, 3-2, on this date in 1993.
To celebrate the first 25 years of the Carrier Dome events are planned throughout the week leading up to an "Anniversary Party" on Saturday, September 17 prior to the SU football game against Virginia.
Thursday, September 15
The Dome will be open as part of Syracuse University’s Employee Appreciation Day sponsored by TIAA-CREF. Employees are invited to enjoy a walking tour of the photo display celebrating 25 years of events in the Dome during the lunchtime event scheduled to take place on the Quad. A pep rally will be held in the Dome at 1:00 p.m. Employees are invited to enter the Dome through Gate E.
Saturday, September 17
Fans are invited to enjoy a birthday cake celebrating the Dome’s 25th anniversary at the Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield Fun Zone on the SU Quad prior to the game. There will be enough cake for the first 500 fans. At halftime of the game, SU will honor those who were instrumental in building the Carrier Dome. The Dome officially opened on September 20, 1980 when the football Orange beat Miami, OH, 36-24.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980, when the Orange football team beat Miami (OH), 36-24, in front of 50,564 fans, which still remains the largest crowd for a football game in the Dome. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
There have been more than 1,740 events since opening day, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with this photo history walking tour.
