SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men’s soccer team (4-0-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) extended its unbeaten streak to five matches, tying Marquette, 1-1, on Friday, Sept. 16 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The contest was the BIG EAST opener for both clubs and the Golden Eagles’ first match as a member of the conference.
Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) gave SU an early 1-0 lead, registering his team-leading third goal at the 19:13 mark. Rowley’s tally came off an Isaac Collings’ (Oriskany, N.Y.) corner kick. Collings sent the ball into the box where it was headed by Ezra Prendergast (Kingston, Jamaica) toward the goal. Marquette goalkeeper Steven Grow got a piece of the shot, but Rowley was there to head in the deflection. Prendergast recorded the first assist of his career on the play.
In the second half, Marquette (3-1-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) had an opportunity to tie the match in the 59th minute, but Jamie Zarse’s shot from the left side of the box hit the goal post and his shot off the rebound was gobbled up by SU keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario). After some more steady offensive pressure, the Golden Eagles notched the equalizer when Duncan Silvert-Noftle one-timed a Nathan Sabich free-kick into the SU net at 77:19. The goal ended Cavicchia’s shutout streak at 413 minutes and 11 seconds. It was the longest such streak by an Orange goalie since Chris Whitcomb went 448 minutes and 40 seconds without allowing a score in 1986.
Neither team was able to muster any quality scoring chances in the two overtime periods. Marquette recorded five shot attempts in the extra sessions, while the Orange tallied four. Cavicchia stopped five shots in the match and Grow also made five saves for the Golden Eagles.
SU outshot Marquette, 22-14, for the game and owned a 10-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The Orange will host No. 16 Notre Dame on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the match is free and gates will open at approximately 12:00 p.m.
