SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men’s soccer team (4-1-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) lost its first match of the season on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1-0, to No. 16 Notre Dame (4-2-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. The loss snapped SU’s six-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season. The stretch marked the Orange’s longest unbeaten streak since 1999 when it won six consecutive matches.
The two clubs played a scoreless first half, but Notre Dame grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute on a Justin McGeeney goal. McGeeney ripped a shot from the right side of the box into SU net after a shot by John Stephens was blocked.
Syracuse turned up the offensive pressure in the second part of the final stanza in an effort to score the equalizer, but was unable to net the game-tying goal. The Orange’s best opportunity to square the match came with a little more than seven minutes remaining in the contest. Senior defender Pat Gallagher (St. Louis, Mo.) fired a shot from 15 yards out, but Notre Dame keeper Chris Cahill made a diving save and smothered the rebound.
Gallagher, redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) and Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) led SU with three shots each and freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made two saves in net for the Orange.
Cahill stopped three shots for the Fighting Irish to earn the shutout.
Notre Dame owned a 17-16 advantage in shot attempts for the game, including a 9-5 advantage in the first half. SU held the edge in corner kicks, 8-4, including a 4-0 margin in the second half. Most of SU’s second period corners came during the final 10 minutes in an effort to tie the game.
The Orange will begin a four-game road swing with a match versus league foe Providence on Friday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
