This Date in Dome History: September 18

Syracuse University has hosted two men's soccer contests and four football games on September 18 in the 25 year history of the Carrier Dome. The men's soccer team is undefeated on this date, having beaten Boston College, 1-0, in 1988 and Long Island University, 3-1, in 1991. The football Orange beat Cincinnati, 19-7, on September 18 in 2004, and lost to Illinois, 47-10 in 1982, to Virginia Tech, 26-17 in 1986, and to Michigan State, 18-13 in 1999.

On September 18 in 1988 the men's soccer team won its eighth straight game, beating Boston College 1-0. T. Kona Hislop scored the goal for SU, assisted by Ralph Pascarella and Kevin Johnston. Chris Whitcomb recorded three saves on three shots in the shutout. In 1991 the 3-1 victory againt Long Island on Sept. 18 was the third in a row for the Orange. Paul Young scored twice, while Malcolm Grace had one goal and one assist and Eric Puls recorded an assist.

In the Orange's football victory against the Bearcats, tailback Walter Reyes recorded one of his 14 career 100-yard rushing games, gaining 119 yards of SU's 227 total rushing yards.

More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980, when the Orange football team beat Miami (OH), 36-24, in front of 50,564 fans, which still remains the largest crowd for a football game in the Dome. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.

In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome.
