HAMILTON, N.Y.- Two extra sessions of play wouldn’t be enough for Syracuse nor Colgate to score Wednesday night as the two teams played to a double-overtime, 0-0, tie. SU had several chances to get on the board with eight shots on goal, however Colgate goaltender Luisa Miller came through for the Raiders with a game-high seven saves.
SU had a 6-5 advantage in shots in the first half of play with four of those shots being on goal. Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.) had a pair of those shots on goal, however could not get the Orange on the board. Goaltender Candice Hofmann (Marcellus, N.Y.) made her first career start against the Raiders making two saves in the first half of play as the score remained 0-0 into the intermission.
The Orange continued to create several opportunities in the second half of play but could not capitalize. SU out shot the Raiders 9-3 in the second half.
In the first overtime, each team had one shot yet the game would be decided. In the second and final overtime period, SU nearly stole the game on a late goal when an Orange shot hit the cross bar erasing the final scoring opportunity of the game.
Hofmann had four saves in goal earning her first career decision. She is the second goaltender all-time at SU to shutout its opponent in its first game ever played. Juli Slack did so in 1997 when SU shutout Boston, 2-0.
Arcuri led the Orange with five shots in the game, three of which were on goal. Kaitlin LaMothe (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) had a number of scoring chances as well with four shots.
The Orange will next be in action Friday it returns home to host BIG EAST Division A opponent West Virginia at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
