Sherman Douglas tied the NCAA record for assists with a 22-dish performance against Providence on this date in 1989. Douglas was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for his efforts, which also included 14 points and five rebounds. His 22 assists put him just six shy of seventh place on the all-time NCAA career assists list.
Five Orange reached double figures, including Stephen Thompson, who led all scorers with 29 points, Billy Owens, who recorded 19 points, Derrick Coleman’s 18 points and nine rebounds and Matt Roe, who added 13 points. The Orange’s balanced offense led to a 100-96 win against the Friars.
Syracuse escaped another close one in 1984 when Dwayne “Pearl” Washington hit a 15-foot jump shot to give Syracuse a 65-63 win against arch-rival Georgetown. Washington finished the night with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists, and was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week for his efforts.
The Hoyas came into the game as the top-ranked team in the country, while Syracuse had crept up to the 12th spot in the polls. Despite the rankings, the two teams proved to be well-matched and at halftime found themselves knotted in a 34-34 tie. The second period proved to be more of the same, and for the last 9:19 of the game neither team could gain more than a two-point advantage. With eight seconds remaining, the Hoyas led 63-62. Washington pulled up for a long jumper coming out of a time out, which swished through just in time to give the Orange the win.
Rafael Addison had an outstanding game against the Hoyas, scoring 26 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds. Addison’s numbers helped him move to second in the BIG EAST in scoring on the season, averaging 19.3 points per game. Playing for Georgetown, Patrick Ewing scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
In 1995, Syracuse beat Miami in a convincing fashion, coming out on top 76-51. The Orange shot 71 percent from the free throw line as a team, and used its consistent shooting down the stretch to build a comfortable lead over the Hurricanes.
The most recent Carrier Dome event on this date came in 1997, when the Orange topped Seton Hall 83-66. Todd Burgan’s 16 points and ten rebounds were enough for a double-double, as were Jason Hart’s 15 points and 10 assists.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
