“We knew we could beat this team so we never lost confidence,” said assistant coach Carol Munger. “The games we lost, we gave up five- or six-straight points. We were winning at the net so we just had to turn things around on our side.”
Junior Cheryl Cobbina led the team with 21 kills and added 12 digs. Sophomore Brittany Kern and freshman Sarah Morton had an impressive match up front. Kern recorded 11 kills, recorded a career-high five digs and led the team with five total blocks. Morton posted a personal-best 12 kills. Freshman Kacie MacTavish added 11 kills and a personal-high 16 digs. Sophomore April Quigley led the team with 57 assists and junior Joscie Kaup recorded a match-high 28 digs.
“Our middle blockers, Sarah Morton and Brittany Kern, really stepped up today,” Munger said. “They had a tough job because Georgetown had a tough player in the middle. They had some nice kills and a good hitting percentage. We pushed to them because they were doing so well.”
The Orange led early in the first game, 12-11, but the Hoyas scored six-straight points to take control of the game and take a 1-0 advantage. Syracuse led 13-11 in the second game but Georgetown scored eight of the game’s next 10 points. Syracuse would respond by scoring five-straight points to regain the lead. With the Orange up 24-23, Georgetown would score the next six points to gain a two-game advantage.
The Hoyas would gain an early lead in the third game, jumping to a 12-6 advantage. Syracuse would fight back and with Georgetown leading 23-20, SU ended the game on a 10-1 run to pull within 2-1. The fourth game was closely contested throughout. SU led 29-28 when Quigley recorded a kill to send the mach to a deciding fifth game. The final game was another close game with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage. Trailing 13-12, Syracuse scored the match’s final three points to claim its first conference victory in 2006.
Syracuse will resume play on Tuesday, hosting Colgate and Binghamton. The Orange will square-off against the Raiders at 4:30 and the Bearcats at 7 p.m.
