SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) recorded her first career hat trick as the Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Georgetown, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Coyne Field. SU’s win improves the Orange to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Hoyas move to 4-6, 0-2.
“Alison had some really nice breakaways,” SU head coach Kathleen Parker said. “She is really a threat because of her exceptional speed and when she controls the ball at that speed she is deadly. It was nice to she her put the two together.”
All of Babbitt’s goals came in the second half with two of the three looking very similar. The sophomore’s first and second goals of the day were created by the Orange’s counter attack. SU got possession of the ball around midfield and Babbitt pushed it into the offensive zone and scored at 37:34 and 45:46. The New York native’s third goal was off a rebound in a scrum in front of the Hoya goal at 55:49.
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) scored the game’s first goal at 14:31. Seniors Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) and Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) helped Sola covert the SU penalty corner.
Senior forward Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa.) tallied the Orange’s other goal off a penalty corner at 39:35. Wreski and Sola were both credited with an assist on the play.
Georgetown railed late, scoring three of the game’s final four goals. Two were off penalty stroke by Lauren Sheets at 54:57 and 65:33. Chelsea Aiken had the other Hoya goal off a rebound for a penalty corner at 47:33.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) made one save for SU. Deirdre Crovo and Abby Winer combined to make eight saves for the Hoyas.
Syracuse dominated the game, outshooting the Hoyas, 17-5. Thirteen of SU’s 17 shots were on cage. The Orange also had an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.
