Louisville, Ky.- The Syracuse women’s soccer team lost to 25th-ranked Louisville, 2-0, in the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Orange is now 31-24-3 when meeting an opponent for the first time. Freshman goalie Eliza Bennett-Hattan started her third consecutive game and made six saves in goal.
Louisville scored in the 43rd minute, snapping Bennett-Hattan’s scoreless streak at 263:49. Jen Avila corralled a loose ball and scored from just outside the penalty box. The Cardinals added another goal 10 minutes into the second half on a shot by Monique Gjini from 25 yards out. Sophomore Sarah VanSickle led the Orange with two shots. Junior Jen Taormina and freshman Chelsea Berry each registered a shot for the Orange.
“Two draws and a loss is not the way we wanted the week to come out, but we have played better and harder the past three games,” head coach Pat Farmer said. “Eliza played very well all weekend and solidified her position as the starter. She made some nice saves today and the two goals they scored were on world class shots. Sarah VanSickle played hard all week, not missing a single minute.”
The Orange (1-9-3, 0-4-1 BIG EAST) visits Providence (3-3-4, 0-3-1 BIG EAST) Friday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. The Orange and Friars are tied for seventh place in the American Division.
