SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Pittsburgh leads the Orange, 21-3, after three quarters of play from the Carrier Dome. The game is SU’s first BIG EAST contest of the year.
Pitt received the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards on six plays to take a 6-0 lead at the 12:31 mark of the first quarter. Panthers’ quarterback Tyler Palko capped the scoring drive, scoring on a naked bootleg from four yards out. Pitt tailback Larod Stephens-Howling carried three times for 51 yards on the drive, including a 40-yard scamper down to the SU four-yard line to set up Palko’s touchdown run. Conor Lee’s extra point made the score 7-0.
The Orange defense thwarted another potential Panthers scoring drive later in the quarter. SU stopped Pitt on fourth and one from the Syracuse 25-yard line with 1:21 left in the opening period and the score remained, 7-0.
The defensive stand jolted life into the SU offense, which responded with an 11-play, 48-yard drive that ended in sophomore kicker Patrick Shadle’s ninth field goal of the year, a 44-yarder, to get the Orange on the scoreboard with 12:16 to play in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 7-3.
Stephens-Howling increased Pittsburgh’s margin to 13-3 with 6:28 remaining in the half on a 70-yard touchdown burst through the center of the Orange defense. Lee tacked on the extra point to make it 14-3. It was the longest rushing play by an SU opponent this year and marked the longest touchdown run since Louisville’s George Stripling ran 89 yards to pay dirt in the Orange’s 2005 season finale against the Cardinals.
The Panthers added to their lead in the third quarter. Palko closed the short 37-yard scoring march when he found Steve Buches alone in the back of the endzone for a one-yard TD hook-up. The touchdown pass increased Pitt’s advantage to 20-3. Lee’s booted home the PAT to boost the margin to 18 with 2:31 to go in the period.
The Orange hits the road for the first time in three weeks when it plays at #4/4 West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is at 12:00 p.m. on ESPN Regional.
