SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse soccer All-American Joe Papaleo was selected as Central New York’s Coach of the Year by the Syracuse Post-Standard on Friday, Nov. 24. Papaleo led Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) to a 23-1 record and an appearance in the state playoffs.
The honor is the second for Papaleo who also won the award in 1995. He has coached the Brothers for the last 12 years and owns a career record of 218-38-12. Papaleo has guided the team to two state championships and eight sectional titles.
At Syracuse, Papaleo played goalkeeper for the Orange from 1979-82 and holds the SU career records for victories (44) and shutouts (36). During the 1982 campaign, Papaleo teamed with current Orange head coach Dean Foti to lead SU to the inaugural BIG EAST Championship and a school-record 16 victories, including 12 via shutout. Papaleo earned second-team All-America honors that season to become the first goalie in school history to be tabbed an All-American.
