The Syracuse men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s basketball teams have played in the Carrier Dome on this date. In addition, the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was held in Dome on this date in 1993.
In women’s lacrosse action, Syracuse scored twice in the final 32 seconds to give the Orange a 12-11 victory against Massachusetts in 2004. The Minutewomen scored six straight goals to take a 10-7 lead with 9:45 remaining. Syracuse responded with two consecutive goals, but UMass re-gained a two-goal advantage when it found the back of the net with 4:54 left on the clock. Leigh-Ann Zimmer cut the lead to one with a goal at the 3:24 mark. Cristine Doran her first goal of the season to tie the score with 32 seconds left. Syracuse got the ensuing draw control as the Orange worked the ball into the offensive zone. With 10 seconds left on the clock Zimmer made her move toward the net and beat Massachusetts’ goalie Joey Rubin to give SU the lead. The Minutewomen earned the following draw control, but could not muster a shot as time ran out. Zimmer finished with four goals and two assists.
The SU men’s lacrosse team has played twice in the Dome on this date. In 1988, Gary Gait had six goals and one assists, while John Zulberti had four goals and three assists as Syracuse defeated Adelphi, 20-10. Matt Palumb recorded 14 saves in the victory. In 1986, SU beat Cortland, 21-5.
The Dome has been the site of many post-season men’s basketball games, including five games on this date. In 1981, Syracuse faced Michigan in the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Tournament. The Orange led, 46-42, at halftime, and opened the second half with a 15-8 scoring run. SU continued to build its lead from there and went on to record a 91-76 victory. Dan Schayes led the Orange with 22 points, while Erich Santifer added 21 points.
The Carrier Dome was part of March Madness in 1993 when it was the site of the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. In the first day of action, Massachusetts defeated Pennsylvania, New Mexico State beat Nebraska, Cincinnati beat Coppin State, and Virginia come out victorious against Manhattan.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
